Acropolis Tips for 2026: Tickets, Hours and the Best Time to Visit

October 27, 2026/0 Comments/in Acropolis Tours, Athens Sighseeing/by VassiliosV2020

The Acropolis is the one place nobody leaves Athens without seeing. It is also the place where a little planning makes the biggest difference. We take guests up the Sacred Rock almost every day, so here is what we tell them before they go.

The Parthenon, the Temple on the top of the Acropolis hill of Athens

1. Book a timed ticket in advance

Entry now works with timed tickets: you choose a one-hour entry window when you buy. Popular morning slots sell out in high season, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. Buy only from the official site, tickets.hh.gr, or through your tour operator. Tickets are non-refundable.

2. What it costs in 2026

TicketPrice
Acropolis, adult€30 (same price all year)
Acropolis Museum, adult€20
EU citizens under 25Free (bring ID)
Non-EU visitors under 18Free (bring ID)

Some sources also list a €15 reduced Acropolis ticket for EU citizens over 65 in the low season. Check the official site for reduced and free categories before you go.

3. Opening hours

PeriodHours
1 April – 31 August08:00 – 20:00
1 – 15 September08:00 – 19:30
16 – 30 September08:00 – 19:00
1 – 15 October08:00 – 18:30
16 – 31 October08:00 – 18:00
1 November – 31 March08:00 – 17:00

Last entry is about 30 minutes before closing. The site is closed on 1 January, 25 March, 1 May, Orthodox Easter Sunday, and 25–26 December.

4. Go early or go late

The quietest times are right at 08:00 opening and the last two hours before closing. Late morning to early afternoon is when the cruise groups arrive and the queues are longest. If you are on a shore excursion from Piraeus, an early start makes the whole day easier.

5. Watch the summer heat

The hilltop has almost no shade and the marble reflects the sun. On heatwave days the Ministry of Culture has closed the site between 12:00 and 17:00 in recent summers. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen, and plan your visit for the morning from June to August.

6. Wear the right shoes

The marble paths are polished smooth by millions of visitors and get slippery. Wear trainers or shoes with good grip, not sandals or heels. Strollers are not allowed on the hill, so a baby carrier is better for small children.

7. Use the quieter entrance

Most people enter at the main west gate. The south entrance, near the Theatre of Dionysus and the Acropolis Museum, is often less crowded. It is a longer walk uphill, but you pass more of the ancient sites on the way.

8. Plan for the free days

Entry is free for everyone on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September and 28 October. It is also free on the first Sunday of each month from November to March. Free days are very crowded, so they suit locals more than visitors on a short stay.

9. Visit the Acropolis Museum too

The museum sits at the foot of the hill and holds the original sculptures, including the Caryatids. It has air conditioning and a café with a view of the Parthenon, which makes it the perfect next stop on a hot day.

10. See it with a guide

Without context, the Acropolis can feel like a field of broken marble. A licensed guide brings the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and the Temple of Athena Nike to life in an hour. Our Athens Acropolis walking tour, Athens Half Day Tour and Athens and New Acropolis Museum tour are built around these tips: early starts, the quieter entrance and the museum when the heat rises. All prices include VAT, and you can cancel up to 48 hours before your tour.
