4 Days: Ancient Corinth, The Canal, Mycenae, Nafplion, Olympia, Delphi, The Monasteries of Meteora & Thermopylae
(Three overnight stays in Olympia, Delphi, and Meteora)
1st Day: Our journey kicks off from Athens in the early morning, heading westward. Our initial destination is the Corinth Canal, an impressive engineering marvel completed in 1893, spanning 6 km to link the Saronic and Corinthian Gulf. Moving on to Ancient Corinth, once one of ancient Greece’s wealthiest cities, you’ll be captivated by the 540 BC Temple of Apollo, its remains reconstructed by Julius Caesar in 44 BC and situated near modern Corinth. Our next stop is Mycenae, reigning from 1600-1100 BC, where the legendary King Agamemnon led the Greeks against Troy. Explore the Mycenaean Acropolis, surrounded by 12 m high Cyclopean Walls, featuring the iconic Lion Gate at the entrance. Further down, uncover the well-preserved prehistoric monument, the Treasury of Atreus. A brief 20-minute drive brings us to Nafplion, Greece’s inaugural capital, nestled beneath Pallamidi hill (216 m). Enjoy lunch with a scenic view of Bourtzi Castle island near the port. Continuing through central Peloponnese (Tripoli, Megalopolis, Zaharo), we reach Olympia, where dinner and an overnight stay await.
2nd Day: In the morning, we delve into the archaeological site of Olympia, where Zeus was venerated, and the Olympic Games were celebrated in his honor. Key landmarks include the Temple of Zeus (470-456 BC), the Heraeum (600 BC), the stadium (6th-5th century BC), and the museum housing treasures like the marble statue of Hermes (340-330 BC) and bronze exhibits spanning the geometric, archaic, and classical periods. Lunch unfolds in the village of Olympia, and as evening descends, we relish dinner and settle in for the night at Delphi, continuing our immersive journey through Greece’s historical treasures.
3rd Day: Immerse yourself in the ancient wonders of Delphi, revered by the Greeks as the navel of the earth. Explore the sacred Castalia spring, where the high priestess Pythia purified herself before delivering divine pronouncements. Traverse the main site along the Sacred Way, marveling at the Temple of Apollo, the Athenian Treasury, theater, stadium, Temple of Athena Pronaia, and Tholos. Conclude the visit with a journey through the museum. Afterward, savor lunch at a traditional local tavern before heading towards Meteora via Arahova and Mount Parnassos. In the late afternoon, reach Kalampaka, where you’ll spend the night, marking the culmination of a day enriched with Greek history.
4th Day: Begin the morning with a visit to the awe-inspiring Meteora, a collection of towering granite rocks adorned with renowned monasteries like the Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Roussanou, Holy Trinity, St. Stephen, and Ag. Nicolaos Anapafsas—some of which will be explored. Enjoy lunch in Kalampaka, and on the return journey to Athens, pass through Thermopylae, the historic site where King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans valiantly resisted the Persians in 480 BC. As the day unfolds, late in the afternoon, return to Athens, marking the conclusion of an enriching exploration of Meteora’s natural and historical wonders. Join our private Greece Multi-Day Tours.
